23 library things 23

I am not a big user of apps and I don't find myself using the new ones I have discovered. I use Pinterest for library ideas. I scan twitter for the most recent news. I like games but they take up too much of my time. If I were a big app user I would use the site that offers free trials.
23 mobile things was ok, but I was bored with the redundancy of each thing...use this app...how would you use it personally or professionally. I enjoyed the original 23 things I participated in, perhaps because the computer was so new to me, and there was so much variety of experiences.
But, all in all, good to know so many apps are at our fingertips.

I selected Appsgone free. It has received excellent reviews. I like it, too. It's a good idea to let people try the apps before they decide to make a purchase. I downloaded cross fingers, and again, time slipped away quickly playing the game. I'm not big into apps, but may peruse Appsgonefree on a rainy day.

23 mobile things 21

I haven't used many apps. One that may be new to some is BookMyne. I can use it to access my library account. A different format than our library catalog.

I've been playing WordCollapse for two hours and my eyes are blurry!! These games can be an addiction!

App MyGarden and Knitting by Craftsy speak to my interests. You have to pay for most of the knitting patterns, but there are a few freebies. I will probably use this app to look for patterns.  I'm an avid gardener, but not sure I will use the MyGarden app. Not sure I like the format.

23 mobile things 18

Bill NYE the science guy was my app choice. Our summer reading program theme is science related so I thought this might be a useful site. Yes, there were 6 simple science experiments that we could use in a program! Endless number of apps! Overwhelming! I use Wikipedia a lot so will use that app, too. When I have a question, there lies the answer.

Of the apps listed I have only used the Mn 511 for road conditions. I added the MPR app because I listen to it on the radio frequently. I like the alarm feature.

I was glad that the mic worked. I could not get a recording in dragon dictation. I'm not sure what I would use this for. Perhaps an audio message on a library webpage? Still need to listen to some tunes and figure out how it all works. Seems to be a popular site with good reviews.

Info.graphics got poor reviews. It wouldn't open for me so I went with Infographics Hub. Looks like it would be a good site to get ideas for layout and design of posters for library events or bulletin boards.

Magisto was fun and creative. I made a video of my puppy. Funny! Yes, this app could be used as a reading reference tool by doing book reviews. It could be used to promote an upcoming event. Videos have not been used much, or at all, in our region on our web pages, or in our libraries. They would add a little spark!

Haiku deck was fun! I created a slide show of an event coming up at our library. I posted it to Facebook privately to view. In actuality it was an advertisement for the app and the text did not appear with the slide. Too slow in appearing, maybe? Has some drawbacks but has potential.

I could not find the YALSA app, but found the Wattpadd app. Looks interesting. I don't see any "popular" authors so assume these are books submitted by authors wanting to make a name for themselves or just wanting to share a good story. Maybe I'll find time to read one? I thought the teen book site would have been a good reference tool in the library.

Our GRRL library system does not have apps, but does provide service to most of the databases listed, including ELM. The library I work in answers AskMN questions one evening per week. One app the library did suggest was BookMyne which is basically our catalog and our accounts. I don't use it very often. I use the catalog off our website. I was surprised to see how many systems do have apps.

23 mobile things 10

In my last blog I said I couldn't find the Instagram app. I decided to try another app apparently related to Instagram. In order to register for it I had to go through Instagram, which I was then given access to.  Roundabout, I know, but success. But I don't know if it's the same on ipad as in mobile. Not immediately impressed. But will post a picture to try it out.

23 mobile things 9

The Aviary app did not initially impress me. I was looking for the Instagram app for ipad which is suppose to edit photos, but could not identify the Instagram app to use on my ipad. So I went with Instacollage. Easy to use. Created a collage of our puppy, who just ran off while I was absorbed in this. Yes, a photo app could be used to create library posters! Very fun!

23 mobile things 8

FriendCaster appears to be the same as Facebook but in a different format. There are features I like about it such as photos appearing on the right side of my wall for easy access. Our library system has a Facebook page which is fun to view. I am friends with other librarians and it is nice to see what they are up to outside of work. I could create a Facebook page for our branch library as a tool for patrons.

23 mobile things 7

I like Pinterest. I use it often to look up ideas for library crafts and library displays. The app makes Pinterest easy to use. I did not understand how to use it very well before I got the app. I made a personal folder classily called "stuff I like." I collected many ideas I will consider for our 2014 summer reading program.

23 mobile things 6

I selected the CloudOn document app. I copied a small article on gardening and copied and pasted it to my email. Slick! I didn't think I would ever be able to create a document on my ipad so this is a great new discovery. Another great work tool!

23 mobile things 5

I chose the Dragon app. I can not get it to record my voice. I'm quite sure the mic works because I use FaceTime quite often. I will continue to try. Stay tuned. This app would be a time saver at work, if it could quickly create a letter or document or jot down a quick note or idea.

23 mobile things 4

I chose the Flipboard app. I subscribed to Library Cool which has lots of interesting articles such as, "Brain function boosted for days after reading a novel"' Drs. prescribe books to treat depression" and "Top 100 most viewed articles on Wikipedia during 2013". There are many useful articles relating to libraries, so, yes, referring to this subscription could be very useful for a library professional.

23 mobile things 3

I have the google app. I use it the most just to find information. I was intrigued with the exercise app, the wifi finder and the red laser barcode QR scanner app. I always wondered how you accessed those codes. I would probably use it if I had an iPhone. I don't take my ipad with me everywhere I go.

23 mobile things 2

I recently updated my IPad 2 to ios7. I watched the video and read the tips relating to this device. It was somewhat difficult to tell what was available on my ipad since the tips covered iPhones as well. I learned more about the control center. Nice to know you can disable it if it keeps popping up on your screen, which annoyed me before. I do not see a feature on my device to turn off the air drop to save battery life? I learned what all the icons are for on the control center. So much information!!

23 Mobile Things 1

I would like to be more skilled using my ipad. I want to keep up with all this new technology. I registered for Twitter, but still have questions about how it's used. I could spend days on one thing! Guess I'll just dive in and keep going!
